The ICC World Test Championship is finally here. It is a league competition with the first edition being this current edition 2019–21. This is a Test cricket format championship with nine (9) teams participating. With two first attempts failing, one might think that this one might not work either. Previous Cancelled Attempts
This championship was first proposed in 2009 with former New Zealand captain Martin Crowe being one of the main people behind the proposal. Mid-September 2010, the ICC (International Cricket Council) Chief Executives’ Committee considered the idea of a Test championship. This was done at their headquarters in Dubai. ICC spokesperson Colin Gibson said that if the championship was held in England the final favoured venue will be the Lord’s Cricket Ground. In the end, it was agreed that the first tournament would be held in England and Wales in 2013. However, one year later, the 2013 tournament was cancelled. ICC announced the Test Championship would not take place until 2017. This was due to many reasons such as financial problems. The 2017 ICC World Test Championship was still cancelled in January 2014.
Participating Teams
The nine teams participating are Australia, Bangladesh, England, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, South Africa, and West Indies. The three other members of the ICC who will not participate are Afghanistan, Ireland, and Zimbabwe. Each of them will play a Test series against six of the other eight teams. Each series consist of 2 – 5 matches so, all teams will play six series that is, three at home and three away.
According to the classification done by www.espncricinfo.com, India is at the head of the ICC World Test Championship with 360 points. They won in all seven (7) matches they played and won 3 series already. India is followed by Australia who won 5 of the 8 matches they played with 216 points. Australia won 1 series so far. Sri Lanka is 3rd with 80 points followed by New Zealand which has 60 points. England and Pakistan both have 56 and 20 points respectively. West Indies, Bangladesh, and South Africa all have 0 points for now. Up till now, we can say the most outstanding team at the moment is India with the 3 series they won.
