Origins and History
of Football

The earliest form of football dates from the second and third centuries BC during the Han dynasty in China. From there, we have historical records of its existence. Almost during the same period, Romans and Greeks played many ball games involving the feet. In fact, FIFA recognizes both Chinese and Greek ball games as the earliest signs of it. Nowadays, it has become one of the most popular sports in India, not only to play but also to bet on.

It was thanks to public schools in England, that the so-called ‘ball game’ was organized as a team sport. In this regard, modern football rules started to be established around the 16th century. Most public schools adopted this practice around the 19th century. It aimed to make the students fit and encourage competitiveness. However, each school developed different rules and styles which led to the different forms of football we know nowadays. After the expansion of the British Empire which brought football to many parts of the world.

Main Leagues & Tournaments

Football managed to expand to the whole world and now, there are many leagues and competitions everywhere. The very first league to be established was the English Football League in 1888. This league was the most popular until 1992 where the Premier League emerged.

Of course, currently, almost every country counts on its national football team and league. Worldwide, we have the FIFA World Cup which is the major international football tournament. Some of these national teams also compete in the Olympic Games which is another reputable tournament known everywhere. Continentally, we have Euro Cup and Nations League; AFC Asian Cup; CAF Africa Cup of Nations; CONMEBOL Copa America (South America); CONCACAF Gold Cup (Central and North America); and OFC Nations Cup.

On the club level, there are several leagues but we can name the most important and popular ones: English Premier League, Italian Serie A, Spanish LaLiga, German Bundesliga, and French Ligue 1. However, it’s worth mentioning the American leagues such as MLS (United States), Argentinian Superliga, and Brazilian Championship.

Regarding club teams, we can’t forget mentioning other big tournaments where the best league teams from different countries face each other to claim the title of the best club of the continent such as the Champions League in Europe or the Copa Libertadores in Latin America, just to name a few of them.

Football in India

The Indian football league belongs to the  Asian Football Confederation (AFC), which comprises other 46 countries located in both Asian and Australian territories. As for India, it counts on 2 premier leagues which co-exist:

I-League: It was founded in 2007 following the National Football League, where 11 clubs from across the country participate during a six-month tournament. It works under a promotion and relegation system as most leagues in the world. Dempo is the most awarded club so far (5 times), while the last champion and defending club is Chennai City (2018-2019).

Indian Super League: founded in 2013 but not recognized until 2017-2018 season, this league counts on 10 teams. It doesn’t work under the promotion and relegation system so far, but it runs for six months as I-League does. Bengaluru FC is the current champion, while ATK and Chennaiyin count on 2 titles each being the most awarded clubs.
