2022 World Cup Qualification For the 2022 World Cup, only 32 national selections will have the chance to get a spot. So far, only Qatar selection is qualified under its condition as host. As per FIFA’s decision, the number of spots assigned per confederation will be as follows:
– Host: 1
– Asian Football Confederation (AFC): 4.5 (4 direct and 1 inter-confederation play-off)
– Confederation of African Football (CAF): 5
– Confederation of North, Central American, and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF): 3.5
– South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL): 4.5
– Oceania Football Confederation (OFC): 0.5
– Union of European Football Associations (UEFA): 13

Inter-confederation play-offs determine the last two qualifying selection spots; four selections will play in March 2022, being the last two matches before the World Cup.

Asian Football Confederation Qualification process

The Asian section of the FIFA 2022 World Cup Qualification counts on a total of 46 selections, Qatar included, which will be participating to get one of the 4 direct spots on the World Cup. AFC Qualification is divided into three rounds, from which the first two serves also as the qualification for the 2023 AFC Asian Cup. In this regard, Qatar participates only in the first two rounds.

AFC for the 2022 World Cup The qualification process started on 6 June 2019 and is yet to end on 16 November 2021. Currently, as for December 2019, AFC is at the second round, in which 40 teams play home-and-away matches against their group mates (8 groups of 5 teams each); where only 12 of them qualify and go to the third round. The next step is to divide the teams into 2 groups of six, from which the first two go to the World Cup and the best 3rd of each group play each other in order to advance to the inter-confederation play-off.

Up to date, there are 4 eliminated teams from the World Cup and there are four rounds left to play in the second round.
