In the previous days Mesut Ozil went onto his social media to give his thoughts about the about the treatment of Uighur Muslims in China. Ozil’s posts called Uighurs as “the warriors who resist persecution” and criticized both China’s treatment and the silence of Muslims in this situation.
China has been consistently denying the mistreatment to Uighur Muslims in the country. Human rights groups says about a million people especially from the Muslim Uighur community were thought to have been withhold without a without trial in high-security prison camps.
After Ozil’s criticism on the treatment, Club Arsenal distance themselves from the situation. They released a short statement on Chinese social platform Weibo: “Regarding the comments made by Mesut Özil on social media, Arsenal must make a clear statement, the content published is Özil’s personal opinion. As a football club, Arsenal has always adhered to the principle of not involving itself in politics.”
After these situations, Chinese fans of the footballer were really angry and topics about these issues were a trend on Weibo.
China’s national English language newspaper Global Times even stated Ozil’s comments as false comments.
Additionally, Chinese Football Association also stated that Ozil’s comments were “unacceptable” and had “hurt the feelings” of Chinese fans.
Repercussions
After all, CCTV – service for broadcast in China – removed the EPL game from their schedule and instead they aired the Tottenham – Wolves match.
Also according to recent updates, Chinese Foreign Ministry Information Department spokesperson Geng Shuang commented on the situation by saying: “I don’t know if Mr. Ozil has been to Xinjiang himself. But it seems he has been deceived by fake news, and that his judgment was influenced by untruthful remarks. If Mr. Ozil has the opportunity, we will be pleased to see him going to Xinjiang and having a look.As long as he has common sense, can make a clear distinction between right and wrong, and upholds the principles of objectivity and fairness, he will see a different Xinjiang.”
Mesut Ozil is not the only Arsenal player who have been mixed up in controversies because of their political views on social media posts. Just on last Thursday after polls open for general election in Britain, Héctor Bellerín tweeted: “Young people across the world have a chance to change what the future can be.
